When finding out about your pregnancy, there are many precautions you are encouraged to take, such as avoiding undercooked fish or meat, alcohol and unpasteurized dairy products. Along with these precautions, one that may be overlooked is maintaining proper oral hygiene!
When you become pregnant, your body starts to experience many changes. One of these changes includes changes in your hormone levels. During this time, tissues also undergo many changes, as the placenta is producing a higher level of both estrogen and progesterone. During your pregnancy, your gums will experience a heightened sensitivity to irritations. This inflammatory response is one of the reasons why pregnant women are at a risk for periodontal disease.
According to the CDC, nearly 60 to 75% of pregnant women have gingivitis, an early stage of periodontal disease that occurs when the gums become red and swollen from inflammation. If untreated, pregnant women run the risk of transmitting oral bacteria to their newborns. However, there’s no reason to fear! We’re here to show you some simple tips to implement into your daily routine to prevent passing harmful bacteria from your mouth onto your baby.
- Brush and floss every day, twice a day! Although this tip may seem simple, brushing and flossing twice a day for two minutes can prevent harmful bacteria from overmultiplying.
- Maintain regular dental visits and professional cleanings.
- Drink fluoridated water and keep your teeth healthy by replacing your toothbrush every three to four months.
