According to the National Institute of Health, 8% of children ages 6-11 have untreated dental decay. Similarly, cavities are one of the most common chronic diseases facing children today in the United States. Untreated cavities and decay pose many problems to the overall health and wellbeing of children, such as problems eating, learning and growing. Also, children with neglected oral healthcare often miss more school and receive poorer grades than children who don’t.
Cavities and decay are formed through many different factors, such as poor brushing and flossing habits, and a consumption of sugary snacks and drinks. When children are not receiving proper nutrients, this will in turn hinder their growth and development, as well as cause cavities to form. New research conducted at the University of London showed a significant link between the height and weight of children with dental decay and cavities, and that children with decay ran the risk of being shorter and more underweight than their peers. Although this study is ongoing and not entirely conclusive, researchers found that, even including external factors such as socioeconomic status and other factors, this link is still prevalent.
